For most of us the month December has us harking back to the same set of cherished Christmas songs. Some of them get forgotten along the way and others may get added but the core remains the same. The songs on this playlist remind us of Christmas past and their presence fills us with happy memories.

As almost all of these yuletide crackers have been universally embraced there should be no surprise that the biggest selling single of all time, ‘White Christmas’ by Bing Crosby, holds pride of place. Equally loved and on constant rotation over the 12 days is Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song’ which may not include the sound of a fire crackling in the background but it’s funny how your mind plays tricks when Nat’s rich vocals swirl all around.

Most decades from the middle of the 20th century right up to the new one are represented here but it is perhaps the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that hold greatest sway. Each new festive period during these times appeared to usher in new classics and they have stood the test of time. From Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ , John Lennon’s ‘Happy Xmas (War is Over’) to the Pogues ‘Fairytale of New York’ there is so much to enjoy on this playlist that you may not deviate from it whatsoever over the holidays.
